Easy Beanie Pattern

Here is a beanie pattern that I wrote a few years ago. I hope it works out all right. It's easy enough that I had it memorized in no time flat. It's pretty basic.Enjoy, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
Striped Beanie

Materials: G crochet hook if you crochet loose, H crochet hook if you crochet tight
worsted weight yarn. (Red Heart grey heather is a really popular color for alot of people all ages in this area. Looks real good made up with this beanie pattern.)

Gauge: First two rnds of hat, 2 inches, from side to side.
Ch4 and join with sl st to form ring, ch 1.
Rnd 1: 11 half double in ring, sl st to first hdc, ch 1.
Rnd 2: 2 hdc in next hdc, and in each st around, sl st in first hdc, ch 1.(22 sts)
Rnd 3: 2 hdc in next hdc, (hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next) repeat around, sl st to first hdc, ch 1. (33 sts.)
Rnd 4: 2 hdc in next hdc, (hdc in next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) repeat around, sl st to first hdc, ch 1. (44 sts.)
Rnd 5: 2 hdc in next hdc, (hdc in next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) repeat around,sl st to first hdc, ch 1. (55 sts).
Rnd 6: 2 hdc in next hdc, (hdc in next 4 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) repeat around, sl st to first hdc, ch 1. (66 sts).
Rnd 7-22: (or till desired length)-hdc in each hdc around, sl st to first hdc, ch 1. (66 sts).Fasten off and weave in ends.

Purple Pink Striped Beanie

I chain one after sl stitching to first hdc because it gives a seam that is hard to see, and is straight, not a spiral thing. At least it looks that way to me. I would appreciate it if you would just use this for gifts, charity, or personal use only. Thank You!! Julee

  1. I'e been looking for a pattern just like this. And it's nice and simple too. Thank you so much!!!! I love the way the joining seam is straight. However, after I stopped increasing, the joiing seam started to spiral. I was wondering if it was supposed to do that or if it's just me?

  2. There is a bit of a spiral once you stop increasing but it shouldn't be to bad though and it still should be some what invisible.

    Happy crocheting!!!

  3. This is such a great pattern, thank you! I wanted to ask, when doing this as a striped beanie do you fasten off each row and weave in or are you carrying the yarn up the seam? Striped or solid, it's a great looking cap!

  4. Hi,
I'm so glad that you like the pattern.

When I switch colors every row I just carry the colors in the back. It's pretty easy and it saves me from having to weave in so many ends (my most favorite part of crochet- lol).

    Have a great week!!

  5. Hey! I love this pattern!
I was wondering what changes you would make if you were to use bigger/different yarn...? I have some that a friend wants me to use, but it's a lot thicker than worsted yarn. I tried to alter the pattern but I'm still new at this...needless to say it turned out pretty horrific. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  6. Howdy,
I think that for bulky yarn I would use a size j hook and only work rnds 1-5 of this pattern. Also, start out with only 10 hdc in the begininning. That means at the end of end 4 you should have 50 sts. Another helpful thing is to make sure that you're circle measures about 5 1/2 inches across before you start working regular rnds ( no increase).

I'm so glad you like this pattern.

  7. ern looks so easy! One question though. Is the chain 1 counting as a hdc or are we skipping that and joining to the next actual hdc?

  8. Hi Amber,
You ignore the chain one and sl st in top of the very first HDC.

    Thanks

  9. I am trying to teach my 6 year old granddaughter to crochet and when I saw that you were 5 and your grandmother taught you, I was instantly curious as to how she managed this. Seems my little one isn't as coordinated or I am doing something wrong in showing her....can you give suggestions as to how to make this a "pleasant" thing as she wants to do everything that her Nana (me) is doing........THANKS!!

  10. my grandmother taught me and mom both how to crochet when i was 6.I picked it up a lot faster than my mom did and have been doing it ever since. My daughter is a lot more wiggly and less focused than i was. I think maybe kids today are more wiggly. haha

  12. Hey Melissa,
You're very welcome. I'm SOOOOO glad to hear that this pattern works so well for you. I've used this pattern for the base of so many hat designs. It's definitely fail safe.

  13. I love this pattern. If I was making this for a 7 or 8 year old. Would I leave out the round that makes the 66 stitches so it wold be smaller. Please let me know. Thanks again for posting this pattern.

  20. Thank you, thank you! I have never found a beanie pattern that actually turned out how I wanted it too, and this one was perfect! I used Lion wool-ease and took your advice on adjustments - I did 4 rows of the pattern, the 5th row with a smaller increase and then regular rounds after that and it looks great...I've made two of them already today :)

  22. OH Julee, thank you for this., I have picked up crochet ( and knitting though that is too painful) just in the last few months. Thank you so much. I do all my stuff for fundraising for the EllenorLionsHopsice who kept me going through some tough times. I am about to volunteer there and hoping I can pass on my skills to others.
I also paint and create greetingcards. all for sale. except whre family grab them first.( my favourite painting was taken back to USA (COnifer, Colorado) by my son and DIL so now I have to paint it again oh dear I am waffling
Just want to say a HUGE THANK YOU for the patterns.
    :-) Happy crocehting
I did teach my granddaughter to knit when she was 8 ;-)

Thank you for this very simple project, my grandmother also taught me to crochet at about age 6. I am planning to do some beanies for our local veterans. Happy crocheting :-)

  24. Hi! I haven't crocheted in years, so this is a perfect refresher project, and my husband needs a winter cap, so I'm off and running. How much yarn should I plan on for the size you have here? (He'll need a cap a bit bigger than this, so I can increase if needed, but it would be great to know how much to begin with.) Thanks!!

  25. What size is this pattern for? I am trying to find a pattern for a 3 year old. I made one and it was a lot bigger than I anticipated.

  26. I love your pattern but trying to modify it to make a messy bun hat with a hole in the top. Can you suggest any way to start the top to accomplish this? Thank you.
